It’s Not Easy

There is a common assumption that making abstract art is easy.

Well, let's say that assumption is misguided.

On Friday, I taught Level 2: Exploring Mixed Media & Abstract Art, and it reinforced something I often talk about — the therapeutic side of making art and the courage it takes to show up for yourself.

The process of making abstract art can ask a lot of us:

• to express ourselves

• to be courageous

• take risks without knowing the outcome.

• trust our intuition and stay present with what's happening on the canvas instead of controlling it

Some would say a trip to the dentist may be more enjoyable! Kidding, kinda…

The group was lovely — and very quiet. Not uncomfortable quiet… flow-state quiet

Everyone was immersed in their painting, working things out, listening and responding as they went. You could feel how focused and inward the room had become.

Each attendee went home grateful they had attended, knowing they had done something good for themselves.

If you're craving creativity but want a little more step-by-step process while still being expressive, my upcoming workshops — Faces of Colour and Mixed Media Florals — are just what you need.

In both workshops, I provide reference photos, samples, and a clear, step-by-step process to follow, while encouraging you to be expressive and creative with your pieces.

Even with my guidance, each painting is still completely personal. Choices, colour, mark-making — your unique creativity always finds its way in.

Making art isn't always easy, but it has a way of teaching us and meeting us where we are.

PS. The picture above is a current in-process abstract piece on my studio wall. It is currently a big mess, which I’m fine with as it is part of the process.
